If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be navigating the early signs of perimenopause while also helping clients do the same, I might not have believed you. But here I am: 42, and beginning to notice the subtle shifts in my body that come with this next phase of life.
Understanding Perimenopause and Its Signs
The transition into perimenopause can be challenging. Many women in their late 30s and 40s experience changes in their bodies. As I spoke with guests, I recognized how common these shifts are. Symptoms like changes in sleep patterns, mood swings, fatigue, and varied energy levels often feel tough to explain.
The Impact of Endocrine Disruptors
These conversations made me reflect on something I’ve long been passionate about: the impact of endocrine disruptors in our beauty routines. Through my health journey, I’ve spent years researching how these ingredients affect the body. Recently, I began considering how they might influence the experiences of the women sitting in my chair, many of whom are navigating perimenopause or menopause. While I wasn’t uncovering something new, I found myself seeing it through a different lens. It reminded me why clean beauty matters so much, especially during hormonal changes.
While we can’t control everything our bodies are going through, we can choose products that are supportive and aligned with our long-term health.

What Are Endocrine Disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with hormone function. They’re found in many conventional beauty products, household items, plastics, and even some foods. While they may not cause immediate harm, consistent, low-level exposure over time can accumulate—especially when our hormones are in a state of fluctuation.
These ingredients are often hidden in products like synthetic fragrances, parabens, and phthalates, commonly found in haircare, skincare, and cosmetics. BPA, commonly used in plastics and food packaging, and triclosan, present in some hand sanitizers and toothpaste, are also included on this list.
The Importance During Perimenopause and Menopause
The body undergoes hormonal changes during perimenopause. The last thing it needs is additional confusion. During this stage, estrogen and progesterone levels begin to shift. These fluctuations are a natural part of aging. However, when endocrine disruptors come into play, they can imitate or block natural hormones. This interference can worsen symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, and disrupted sleep. Over time, they may even increase the risk of earlier menopause or hormone-related conditions.
This isn’t about fear; it’s about awareness. Our systems are already managing a lot. Anything we can do to reduce the load is a step toward feeling better.
Identifying Exposure and Making Better Choices
These endocrine disruptors are more common than we realize. They lurk in products ranging from hair spray to body lotion, and even air fresheners and cling wrap. Fortunately, small changes can have a significant impact.
A great starting point is choosing products without synthetic fragrances. Instead, look for brands that use essential oils or are genuinely fragrance-free. Another simple yet effective swap is using glass or stainless steel containers instead of plastic. Choosing organic produce, particularly items like strawberries, spinach, and apples can help lower exposure to pesticide residue. Additionally, opting for clean beauty products with clear, transparent ingredient lists ensures you’re making choices that align with your well-being.
Transitioning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Consider it a gradual shift. Every small choice brings you closer to supporting your body naturally.
